SYNOPSIS: BIENNIAL YEAR IN REVIEW
YEAR 2009
We had our first New Year’s Truck Stop Bashment, which we decided
to use as a vehicle to increase membership /networking, as
well to distribute our Raffle Books for the Spring Fling
event.
The Association was voted the
Best Jamaican Social Association
in the Miami, Ft. Lauderdale and Palm Beach areas – Jamaican
worldwide survey taken by
Jamaicans.com.
In April, we had our 2nd Spring Fling Fundraising
Dinner/dance.
In October, we had our 1st Halloween Picnic which was
fun and also a learning experience.
In November we presented our 1st Health Fair on the
grounds of Alpha Academy. The event was dubbed “Mission
Healthy Alpha” and was the brain-child of Director, Dr. Sandy
Lawrence. Six committee members went on the Mission and we
distributed 1400 Care Packages to each student. The Prime
Minister visited the Health Fair and addressed the students.
It was an extremely gratifying and successful event.
In December, we had a Christmas luncheon at the President’s house.
The Sister Mary Bernadette scholarship was awarded to Stacy Ann
Walters.
Check
was given to the Offices of the Sisters of Mercy for the
upkeep of several scholarships.

In April, we had our 3rd Spring Fling coinciding
with the 15th Anniversary of the Association. We
honored 15 persons who we thought had contributed to the
Association over the years with their unwavering support and
dedication. Mrs. June Chin, the architect of the Association,
was also honored as well as Chairman, Olga Azan, for her
outstanding service to the Association.
In May we were honored by the Jamaican Chapter for outstanding
service to our Alma Mater. President Pat Lee accepted the
award on our behalf at the Woman of Excellence Award night at
the Pegasus Hotel in Kingston.
We had a summer bash in July, at the Truck Stop, which
coincided with the celebration of Addy’s 50th
birthday – it was a lovely and entertaining night.
In November, we participated at the Jerk Festival at Markham
Park in conjunction with Novelty Trading Company. We had a
membership drive as well as a T-Shirt sale.
The Chairman of the Board resigned, and the President thanked
her for her invaluable service to the Association.
In December, we had a “Christmas in a Cup” Tea Party for the
paid membership. It was held at alumna Donna Fong’s house in
Davie.
Sister Bernadette Scholarship recipient was Yannique Ewers who
will be attending the University of the West Indies. Checks
were given to the Offices of the Sisters of Mercy for the
upkeep of several scholarships.
A donation of $1,500 was made to the Thelma Gibson Health
Initiative to assist with their Youth & Family Services and
HIV/Aids Substance Abuse Program.

Souldance
captures the voice of every Jamaican, as well as
their thoughts and dreams. Taken from writings
spanning Jean Lowrie-Chin's 30 year career, the
pieces reflect the events that uplift, as well as
burden, Jamaican society. Her poetry is both
universal and prophetic, from the warnings against
the rat race in "Slow Down Child", to the startling
take on the life of Lee Boyd Malvo in "Your Son
Too"; they demonstrate that though so much has
changed, a lot has also stayed the same. Her
selection of columns are amusing and inspiring,
reflecting on the achievements of outstanding
Jamaicans such as The Honorable Louise Bennett,
Usain Bolt and Jessie Ripoll, later Mother Claver.
Yet, they address some of Jamaica's most pertinent
issues, like the future of Jamaican men, in "A
Vision of Our 'Men at Risk'".
Souldance
,
Jean Lowrie-Chin's first and much-awaited book, is
the work of a woman who loves her country and has
truly experienced it. It is a moving, significant
addition to Jamaica's creative and intellectual
literature. |

(Jean Lowrie-Chin recently presented the library, all
Literature teachers, all sixth form
literature students with complimentary signed copies of
the book).
Jean Lowrie-Chin is a well-known
Jamaican entrepreneur and writer. Her poetry has been
published in various newspapers and journals and she has
performed her pieces for both Jamaican and international
audiences. In addition to running a prestigious PR and
marketing firm, PROComm, with her husband and business
partner Hubie Chin, she currently writes a column for the
Jamaica
Observer.
(The
above information was taken directly from the back cover
of the publication, "Souldance").
In her
works, Jean Lowrie-Chin further highlights other Jamaican
greats (The Honorable Herb McKenley and Archbishop Samuel
Carter); mentors and friends (Sister Mary Bernadette
Little, Winston Chung Fah, Dwight Richards, Shirley
Brathwaite, the late Pauline Gray, Hugh Croskill - to name
a few); her encounter with Pope John Paul II; amazing trip
to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China; and most
importantly, her husband and two children.
She has
given unconditional support, time and efforts towards the
Alpha Florida Chapter,
for which we are forever grateful. Not only does she give
back to Alpha Academy, she is also a member of the School
Board for St. George's College, her "brother" school and
husband's Alma Mater.
